Before departure

Install Alipay and WeChat, register with your international phone number and link an eligible overseas bank card. Complete identity verification before you travel if prompted.

On the ground

Scan merchant QR codes or show your payment code. International Visa and Mastercard cards can be linked to the major apps, though availability and fees can vary.

Always carry a backup

Keep a physical bank card and some renminbi cash. Cards are useful at larger hotels and stores; cash remains legal tender and is valuable when connectivity fails.
